More Bird Rites

After the last post, my friend ircnetsplit (go check out his books!) mentioned a potential myth for Thordani feather imping.

“I’m seeing a (possibly embelished, possibly not) story of a group that got mauled pretty badly by something (combat, accidents, etc) and they pool their feathers to one person who goes for help or to raise an alarm, immortalized like Marathon is.”

He isn’t wrong and this is absolutely being used now in my canon. Might even have to put it in the religious texts of Faenya. Officially, these are “The Book of Sky’s Blessing”, though often I’ve been known to jokingly refer to it as the “Sky-ble.”

Later, I was having a conversation elsewhere about the possible applications of additional limbs in spellcasting. IRCnetsplit has a race of spider-people, the Addercop, (find out more in his book!) who feature heavily in his stories, and he was commenting on how a spider might have significantly different somatic components and gestures for spells. They literally have more limbs to throw at the problem of weaving and controlling the aether, why wouldn’t they use that?

And it suddenly came together.

Art of Aikine commissioned from Jakkal.

The runes on Aikine’s wings? She can use them to channel and direct the flow of her magic as she casts. It basically acts as a big old focusing array.

I had already had the runes on her wings and a few suggestions about it, but this is when the spark really happened. My brain just went, “Wait, AIkine was hatched with those wings, so there’s no reason she wouldn’t use them in the process, especially since she was raised by avariel, who aslo have wings, so they’d teach the same!”

When Aikine inevitably gets TFed later in Kaerwyn RP, I think she’ll find that somewhat difficult. Something to adjust for. I don’t want her to lose all magic from that, but maybe akin to typing with one hand. Needs more thought.

But yeah, some of this is gonna get good.

Also, Aikine is actually an Asari, a halfling-sized hawk race that lives alongside the Thordani in mixed villages. The idea of how different sized individuals work…well, still working on that!

Hope you like this additional peek.
